My goal is to create images that make everyday subjects interesting, to create significance from the mundane.  I find these subjects by driving the less traveled roads.  Once found, I evaluate the scene to isolate the most interesting part, to answer the question "What caught my eye and made me look?".  Often the lighting, the weather or the season just isn't right and I have to return at another time.  But when everything comes together, an image is created that shows those everyday objects in a new, more interesting manner.

I am most influenced by the work of Jack Acrey, Ron Rosenstock, John Shaw, Edward Weston, Margaret Bourke-White, David Plowden, Tillman Crane, Michael A. Smith, Paula Chamlee and Norman McGrath.  These men and women: some of whom I can call a friend; others I have just briefly met and a few I know only through their work; are amazingly talented photographers and by studying their work and vision I have developed my own style of seeing the world.

Equipment Used

I use a variety of equipment, formats and film to create my images.  Some of the images in the galleries were made with either my Nikon 35mm system or my Mamiya RB67 system.  The Mamiya is a great system but it isn't a lot fun to hike with it.  Most of the images have been made with either a Wisner 4x5 Pocket Expedition or a Deardorff 5x7.  The lenses for all three systems (in 35mm equivalents) range from about 20mm to 200mm.  I tend to see either wide or long.  I don't have a lot of use for normal lenses.

I use several different films.  I use mostly Kodak E100VS and some Fuji Velvia or Provia for color transparency film.  Ilford HP5+ and Agfa Scala are my choices for Black and White films.  Ilford HP5+ is a negative film while the Agfa Scala is the only true Black & White transparency film.  Several images were created with Kodak High Speed Black & White Infrared 4x5 sheet film but Kodak has discontinued this item and I am not satisfied with the currently available replacements .
